The 150th Anniversary of the Pallottines

Words of praise from Pope John Paul II and Archbishop James Hickey marked the 150th anniversary celebration of the Pallottines, a society of priests, brothers, and sisters around the world. The Pallottines of North America observed the anniversary with a Mass concelebrated by 11 bishops and 52 priests at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., on April 20.
Just before the Mass the society presented a bust of St. Vincent Pallotti, the priest who founded the society, to the Shrine. The bust, created by Sister Paula Beierschmitt, IHM, was blessed by Archbishop William Borders of Baltimore.
“The Holy Father knows and appreciates your work,” Archbishop Pio Laghi told the Pallottines at the anniversary Mass, “and he has asked me to convey his prayerful encouragement for all that you do to build up the Body of Christ.
“The Pallottine way of life, as envisioned by St. Vincent, is designed to give expression to the hidden and public life of Christ,” Archbishop Laghi, the papal nuncio and principal concelebrant of the Mass, told the congregation of 1,500. He added that, “It is refreshing to note that, even after 150 years, the saintly wisdom of this simple formula remains eminently valid.”
