Forty fathers are using their presence to combat violence at the local high school

CommunityAbout 40 fathers at a high school in Shreveport, Louisiana, have done something simple, effective, and mostly untried at school: They are using their presence to combat violence that recently led to 23 students arrested in three days. “Dads on Duty” group founder Michael LaFitte says, ““We decided the best people who can take care of our kids are who? Are us.”
According to a New York Post article (Oct. 24), the dads take shifts “to patrol the school, keeping eyes on their kids and troublemakers in the building.” The men call to mind the Guardian Angels of yesteryear New York City, but these fathers patrol school corridors instead of subway trains.
LaFitte says their kids are “so embarrassed by it.” But embarrassment is not unhappiness.
“The school has just been happy,” one student told a reporter. “And you can feel it.”
This is welcome good news, the kind that imparts hope.
